Reliable metadata?

Yes, as Geoff Nunberg shows, it is difficult to catalog huge masses of stuff, and few people should be surprised that Google ain't perfect... but to call for 'reliable metadata' as the way to solve this problem... Come on... How old fashioned is that? Reliable to whom? where? when?
